The Harewood Estate in West Yorkshire is home to acres of carefully managed countryside, as well as a wide range of historic buildings.

The architecture, land and wildlife are all cared for through a nationally recognised conservation programme, overseen by the Earl and Countess of Harewood, David and Diane Lascelles.

As part of this programme, the estate recently invested in a 500 kw woodchip boiler, fuelled by thinnings from the 850 acres of forestry on the estate. The project will provide a sustainable heat source for 30 properties, including commercial office space, with plans afoot to increase capacity in the future.

The boiler house and three adjoining fuel storage sheds were installed, as well as enclosing the 500KW Viessmann biomass boiler and 5000 litres of water storage, the building also keeps dry the 600 tonnes of woodchip needed every year to fuel the heating system.

The entire energy centre was topped with Eternit profile 6 sheets in Natural Grey, plus Eternit barge boards and ridges at the request of the team at Harewood.

The estate particularly specified Eternit fibre cement sheets thanks to the special colour application method used in the manufacturing process.

Here, the distinctive texture of the fibre cement substrate is allowed to show through, giving a much more natural appearance right from new.

Apart from aesthetics, fibre cement is also rust and corrosion resistant and reduces condensation – a real consideration when housing dry wood.
